Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that helps families access affordable housing, but it also operates ReStores, which sell donated furniture, appliances, household items and building materials.
The first ReStore was opened by five volunteers in Winnipeg in 1991. The idea caught on, and there are now more than 1,000 locations across six countries.
Profits from ReStores help fund Habitat housing projects, and donated items are given a second chance instead of ending up in the landfill, so it’s a win-win!
Every ReStore is different, and its inventory is constantly changing. Some of the items you may find include windows, doors, paint, hardware, lumber, tools and appliances.
The Waterloo Region ReStore is also great for anyone who enjoys restoring or upcycling furniture, as you’ll often find “diamonds in the rough” waiting to be transformed into one-of-a-kind creations.
