Uptown Jazz & Downtown Blues

Uptown Jazz & Downtown Blues

Summer’s in full swing, so it’s time to hit the streets and jazz things up!

It’s that time of year again when the heart of Uptown Waterloo comes alive with the smooth and soulful sounds of jazz. That’s right – the Uptown Waterloo Jazz Festival is back!

This year’s festival will take place between Friday, July 17th and Sunday, July 19th at the Uptown Waterloo City Centre.

This year’s lineup features headline performers including Four80East, Alexis Baró Y La Big Band and Adrean Farrugia Quintet, along with local talent such as Matt Weidinger, The Stack, Paul Stouffer, Tim Moher, and the Youth Jazz Ensemble.

In addition to all of the amazing live music, there will be an assortment of vendors offering delicious food and refreshing beverages to help “jazz up” your taste buds!

Music lovers are in luck this summer because the Kitchener Blues Festival is also set to feature a wide mix of acts throughout the downtown core from Thursday, August 6th to Sunday, August 9th.

This family-friendly, non-profit festival brings together local, national and international talent, including The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Sass Jordan, Goddo and King King, along with local favourites such as Matt Weidinger Band, FOG Blues & Brass Band, and Isy Aboagye.

The fun kicks off with a fundraising concert on Thursday, August 6th, but there are over 35 free acts to check out across four different Downtown Kitchener stages! Hope to see you there 🙂

Give Yourself Some Credit

Give Yourself Some Credit

Knowing your credit score ahead of time can save you thousands!

The home of your dreams has finally hit the market! You assume it’ll be easy to get a mortgage, but if your credit’s not in great shape, your dream home may just remain a dream.

Having a clear understanding of your credit score before you get pre-approved for a mortgage and start shopping for homes can help you avoid any last-minute surprises.

A solid credit score makes you more attractive to financial institutions, which means you may be eligible for better rates and terms that can save you thousands of dollars in interest!

Here are a few simple steps you can take to improve your credit score:

Know the Score
Order a fresh copy of your current credit report from Equifax or TransUnion so you can review it ahead of time.

Fix the Flaws
If there’s a blemish on your credit report, reach out to the creditor to see if you can get it cleared up.

Pay It Forward
It’s extremely important to pay your bills on time. If late payments become a pattern, it’ll raise red flags and dramatically affect your credit score.

Know Your Limit
Don’t continuously max out your cards, and hold off on taking on large financial obligations, such as buying a new car, before applying for a mortgage.

Less Is More
The number of times you’ve applied for credit can affect your score, so don’t apply for credit unless you plan on using it.

Consistency Is Key
Lenders look for a long track record of consistent payments, so the earlier you start building credit responsibly, the stronger your history will be.

Knowledge is power when it comes to your credit score, so find out where you stand ahead of time, even if you don’t think there are any issues.

If you know your credit’s in need of repair, start fixing it right away, as a good credit rating may help you qualify for preferred rates, which can amount to thousands of dollars in interest savings!

Finally, it’s never too early to start thinking about your mortgage options, as there may be certain homebuyer plans you could qualify for if you plan for them in advance.

The Grass Can Always Be Greener

Put a Damper on Dampness

Turn your neighbours green with envy with these simple lawn care tips!

A thick, healthy lawn doesn’t just look amazing. It instantly boosts your home’s curb appeal and creates a more enjoyable outdoor space for your family.

Here are a few natural lawn care tips to help keep your grass looking its best this summer:

Stay Sharp
Avoid mowing when the grass is wet, and remember to sharpen your blade several times throughout the season.

Zig Zag
Mowing your lawn in a different direction each time helps prevent wear patterns and encourages upright growth.

No Short Cuts
Don’t cut your lawn too short. Taller grass is more stress-tolerant, helps shade out weeds and develops deeper roots to absorb moisture.

Breathe Deeply
Aerating your lawn loosens compacted soil, allowing water, oxygen and nutrients to reach the roots more easily.

Natural Nutrients
Unless your grass is in really rough shape, it’s best to leave the clippings on the lawn, as they’ll break down and provide valuable nutrients.

Pet Patches
If your furry friend is creating brown urine patches on your lawn, water the area right away to help dilute the nitrogen and minimize the damage.

A healthy lawn does more than just turn heads. It releases oxygen, captures dust and dirt, and helps keep the yard cooler and more comfortable all summer long, giving everyone one more reason to spend time outside!
