K-W Is Lighting Things Up!

K-W Is Lighting Things Up!

The joy of the holiday season is upon us, which means it’s time to light things up!

It’s that magical time of year again when we’re able to get out and enjoy an endless variety of spectacular light displays to help get us into the holiday spirit!

Bingemans is once again hosting the Gift of Lights, where you can drive through two illuminated tunnels with over 300 colourful light displays as you wind through the 2.5 km sparkling path from the comfort of your car.

Each visit contributes to a greater cause, as Gift of Lights donates a portion of its ticket sales to the Grand River Hospital Foundation.

There’s also the Wonders of Winter, where you can enjoy over 120 colourful light displays as you stroll through beautiful Waterloo Park. Hot drinks and popcorn will be available on Fridays and Saturdays between 6 pm and 9 pm.

There’s so much going on in the Kitchener-Waterloo area this time of year, but whatever your plans are, here’s wishing you a wonderful holiday season and a happy and healthy 2026!

Living With Extended Family

Living With Extended Family

More families are choosing to live under one roof, but is it the right move for you?

Multigenerational living is becoming increasingly popular as families look for practical ways to share resources and support one another.

Many grandparents find that living under the same roof eases feelings of loneliness while giving them more time with their grandkids. Parents, in turn, benefit from reduced childcare costs.

And with today’s home prices, many young adults are choosing to stay home longer so they can save for a down payment rather than paying high rent elsewhere.

But while this lifestyle offers many advantages, it also comes with challenges. Here are a few things to discuss before everyone moves in together:

Know Your Needs
Talk through must-have features such as a private entrance, a secondary kitchen, and adequate parking. This ensures everyone is on the same page when it comes to finding the right home.

United Front
Parenting styles can vary across generations. Establish consistent rules around playtime, meals, routines, and discipline so authority remains clear and consistent.

Who Does What
Agree in advance on how you’ll divide common household chores such as cooking, cleaning, childcare, and yard work so that everyone knows what to expect.

Money Matters
Create a clear plan for how household costs will be shared, including groceries, cleaning supplies, utilities, internet, repairs, and unexpected expenses.

Buffer Zone
Living under one roof offers many benefits, but it can also sometimes feel a little crowded. Make sure everyone has personal space where they can unwind and recharge.

Moving On
Discuss what will happen if someone eventually wants to move out or sell their portion of the home so that you’re not caught off guard or left with unexpected expenses.

Multigenerational homes are making a strong comeback because they offer sensible solutions to both social and financial challenges. With open communication and a solid plan, they can be an incredibly rewarding way to live.

If you’re considering multigenerational living and want help exploring homes that fit this lifestyle, feel free to reach out so that we can discuss your next move!

Help Support K-W Businesses

Help Support K-W Businesses

Shopping local is one of the best gifts you can give this holiday season.

With competition from big-box stores and online retailers growing each year, choosing to shop local can make a huge difference for the hard-working entrepreneurs who keep our community vibrant.

The holiday season is especially important for small businesses, as many rely on the Christmas rush to carry them through the slower months.

If you’re looking for meaningful gift ideas this year, consider thinking beyond the usual items and exploring what our local shops and service providers have to offer.

For instance, a cooking class, a carpentry workshop, a hot-air balloon ride, or an escape room adventure are a few unique ideas that are sure to please!

A gift certificate to a “best-kept secret” type of restaurant, or perhaps a relaxing spa treatment, is another great way to help support our hardworking local businesses.

If you’re a last-minute shopper, don’t panic, as there’s still plenty of time to buy from the wide variety of small businesses in Kitchener-Waterloo, as orders can often be prepared and picked up on the same day without the need for shipping.

In addition to shopping at local businesses, you can also help spread the word by leaving a review, tagging and following them on social media, liking and sharing their posts, and recommending them to friends and family.

Our local businesses play a huge role in shaping the character of our community. By choosing to shop local this holiday season, we strengthen our communities, support our local economy, and help ensure these amazing businesses continue to thrive.
